First taken by ExtremeTech (but already widely spread everywhere), Windows 10 started to advertise your promotion Tomb Raider on your screen lock for a limited number of users. One might consider when it starts or when the user is logged in and out of your computer.
Needless to say, the reaction was much jumping on Microsoft throat about it. It was labeled as evidence of how Microsoft will deliver users "for free upgrade in the long term and symptomatic of a hellish future when Windows 10 users will face pop-up ads first open the Word, the third time they open Internet Explorer, etc., etc.
The good news is that there is no need to worry about all that, yet.
First, Microsoft indicated its intention to use the screen lock "personal recommendations" in an interview with The Verge again in July 2015 and Tomb Raider is not even the first. Subordinates effectively advertise on Windows 10 Lockscreens a small number of users in January.
Second, there is no suggestion at this time Microsoft has been provided for this promotion and is simply a way to store own flag Microsoft Windows. Third, the ads can easily disable it as follows:
- "Settings" Open then 'Customize'
- "Screen lock" Open
- Changing "background" to a personal selection rather than "point of Windows'
- Switch 'Get fun facts, tips, tricks and more on the lock screen' Off
It is also interesting to note Windows Store ads have already appeared in Windows 10. Back elsewhere 'app suggestions October appeared in the Start menu. But again, they could be deactivated quickly and Microsoft told the Inquirer:
"We will continue to offer Windows ADS applications in Windows 10. Beyond this, we currently have no plans to advertise on Windows 10 ... lock and start the content is programmed by Microsoft to help customers to learn and discover new features and applications to enhance the experience of Windows 10, application providers do not pay to be submitted ".
All very well.
But as is often the case with Microsoft at this time, the company could do a better job of spelling of these things to their users beforehand with pop-up Windows notifications and instead dissipate the inevitable confusion and concern with messages and Speaking to the media after the blog.
Until then, we will meet with a problem: a tremendously ambitious system and potentially game-changing operating unnecessarily continues to leave its user base from mainstream in the dark.
